This Sunday sees us return to the numbered or ordinary Sundays of the year, following Lent, Easter and the great Sundays of Trinity and Corpus Christi that follow in their wake.

On the 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time, in Year B, the first reading comes from the prophet Ezekiel. It evokes the cosmic power of God, his power to raise up and pull down – and perhaps especially to do this with leaders – and his desire to offer careful protection to the little ones. The prophecy is in some respects an anticipation of Mary’s Magnificat!

The Lord says this:
‘From the top of the cedar,
from the highest branch I will take a shoot
and plant it myself on a very high mountain.
I will plant it on the high mountain of Israel.
It will sprout branches and bear fruit,
and become a noble cedar.
